TROPICS WORTH WATCHING

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 05:25:54 GMT

Happy Friday, South Florida!Hopefully everyone had a great end to the week. After seeing heavy downpours and thunderstorms push through north to south across South Florida on Thursday afternoon and early evening, drier air in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere moved in today and allowed for a beautiful summer day in South Florida. Other than a spotty shower or two earlier this morning, rain chances were at a minimum with plenty of sunshine to go around. This allowed temperatures to reach the mid to low 90s with a nice breeze in place. This evening South Florida will continue with very quiet conditions , as we remain mainly dry ahead of the weekend.Speaking of the weekend, lower rain chances will leak into the start of it. On Saturday a few spotty showers will be possible, especially across inland areas in the afternoon. Otherwise a warm day is in the forecast for South Florida as afternoon high temperatures reach into the mid 90s once again. (Average temperatures should be c...

The shop, officials said, was closed at the time of the crash because of rainy weather, meaning no one was inside. “That’s good because they’re usually open all the time,” said neighbor Patrick Hunt.Video shared with 7NEWS showed the car involved in this crash first come around a corner before drifting off the road and smashing into the building. Neighbors said they heard a loud bang at the moment of impact and soon saw the car in the front of the shop.“Obviously, it’s pretty insane when the ice cream place right next to you has a car through it,” Hunt said. Gloucester’s Acting Building Commissioner Donald Belanger was on scene with board-up crews around 4 p.m. Friday after...

Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey is sounding off against the harassment of witnesses in the ongoing, high-profile murder case involving a woman accused of killing her boyfriend, a Boston police officer, last year. In a video statement posted online, Morrisey said of the witnesses, “To have them accused of murder is outrageous. To have them harassed and intimidated based on false narratives and accusations is wrong. They are witnesses doing what our justice systems asks of them.”“We try people in the court and not on the internet for a reason,” he continued. “The internet has no rules of evidence. The internet has no punishment for perjury and the internet does not know all the facts.” Prosecutors have said Karen Read ran over her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, with her SUV in January, 2022 after a night of drinking. Read, prosecutors said, then left the scene. She maintains her innocence and says he was attacked by a...

A South Florida lawyer has filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump seeking to have the former president declared ineligible to run for another term as president. The lawsuit, citing Trump’s involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, wants the federal courts to enforce the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, added after the Civil War to prevent people who engaged in rebellion against the United States from holding office again.Lawrence Caplan’s lawsuit asserts the provision clearly applies to Trump:“President Trump’s efforts both in Washington, as well as in Georgia and perhaps other states, as well as the consequential assault on the U.S. Capitol … make him ineligible to ever serve in federal office again. Now given that the facts seem to be crystal clear that Trump was involved to some extent in the insurrection that took place on January 6th, the sole remaining question is whether American jurists who swear an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution upon their entry to the bench, wil...

COLUMBIA, Mo. The conflicting decisions, handed down hours apart in two Republican-led states, added to the legal unpredictability that is unfolding nationwide over a historic wave of new laws this year that target LGBTQ+ rights. Underscoring the fast-changing landscape, Texas swiftly appealed to keep its new restrictions on track to take effect Sept. 1, when it would become the largest state in the U.S. to enforce a ban on gender-affirming care for minors. “Across the country, countless transgender youth are having their well-being threatened and their lives uprooted by dangerous and unconstitutional bans,” said Elizabeth Gill, an attorney for the ACLU, which represented families and doctors challenging the Texas ban.More than 20 states have adopt...

Alabama seeks nation’s 1st execution by nitrogen hypoxia

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama is seeking to become the first state to carry out an execution by nitrogen hypoxia. The Alabama attorney general’s office on Friday asked the state Supreme Court to set an execution date for Kenneth Smith using nitrogen hypoxia, a method the state has said for years that it was working to develop.Nitrogen hypoxia is caused by forcing the inmate to breathe only nitrogen, depriving them of oxygen and causing them to pass out and die, according to the theory. Nitrogen makes up 78% of the air inhaled by humans and is harmless when inhaled with oxygen. Critics have likened the untested method to human experimentation.Alabama authorized nitrogen hypoxia in 2018 but the state has not attempted to use it until now to carry out a death sentence. Oklahoma and Mississippi have also authorized nitrogen hypoxia. The court filing did not disclose the details of the how the execution would be carried out. Corrections Commissioner John Hamm told reporters last m...
