The letter reminds schools of their legal duty to protect students and intervene to stop harassment that disrupts their education.“The rise of reports of hate incidents on our college campuses in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict is deeply traumatic for students and should be alarming to all Americans,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement. “Antisemitism, Islamophobia and all other forms of hatred go against everything we stand for as a nation.”Universities have faced mounting criticism over their response to the war and its reverberations at U.S. schools. Jewish and Muslim students ...

(CNN) — A man has been charged with a hate crime after he allegedly “made his hand into the shape of a firearm and made a shooting gesture” toward a US Postal Service worker near Fort Lauderdale, then ripped off her hijab and slapped and punched her in the face, according to police and court documents. The alleged attack on the postal worker comes as incidents inspired by hate against Muslims and Jews escalate in the US following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel and the intense Israeli bombardment of Gaza.In Wilton Manors, Florida, Kenneth Jerome Pinkney, 47, approached the uniformed postal worker, who has not been named publicly, on October 24 while she walked up to a home delivering mail, a probable cause affidavit states. He rode his bike past the victim and made a “shooting gesture” with his hand, then called her derogatory names and told her “to go back to her country,” it states. The postal worker tried to laugh the comments off, according to the probable cause sta...

Minnesota Supreme Court dismisses ‘insurrection clause’ challenge and allows Trump on primary ballot

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 19:52:36 GMT

By STEVE KARNOWSKI and NICHOLAS RICCARDI (Associated Press)MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit seeking to bar former President Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 primary ballot under a constitutional provision that forbids those who “engaged in insurrection” from holding office. The state’s high court declined to become the first in history to use Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to prevent someone from running for the presidency. The court dodged the central question of the lawsuit — does Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol disqualify him from the presidency — by ruling that state law allows parties to put whomever they want on the primary ballot.“There is no state statute that prohibits a major political party from placing on the presidential nomination primary ballot, or sending delegates to the national convention supporting, a candidate who is ineligible to h...

Bruins notebook: Attentive Danton Heinen showing veteran savvy

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 19:52:36 GMT

Danton Heinen will never be a bruiser. At 6-foot-1 and 188 pounds, he’s average height for an NHLer, and a tad on the slim side. But if a player is smart and attentive, he can not only learn how to win little battles in the NHL, he will come to understand the significance of them.It looks like Heinen is smart and attentive. With four games under his belt in his second tour of duty with the Bruins, it’s becoming clear he’s added a layer of of responsibility and tenacity on the puck that can make him a valuable utility man for coach Jim Montgomery, especially after it was learned Morgan Geekie will be out week-to-week with an upper body injury.“I think as you get more years in the league, you realize that those things are really important because there’s a lot of good players out there and there’s not a whole lot of difference,” said Heinen after Wednesday’s practice. “And the small stuff is not something everyone sees. But as you get older, you reali...

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. launched an airstrike on a facility in eastern Syria linked to Iranian-backed militias, in retaliation for what has been a growing number of attacks on bases housing U.S. troops in the region for the past several weeks, the Pentagon said. The strike by two U.S. F-15 fighter jets was on a weapons storage facility linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. This is the second time in less than two weeks that the U.S. has bombed facilities used by the militant groups, many operating under the umbrella of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which U.S. officials say have carried out at least 40 such attacks since Oct. 17.Lolita C. Movie Review: Nicolas Cage finds fame to be highly overrated in chillingly funny ‘Dream Scenario’

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 19:52:36 GMT

Quick: What’s a good adjective for Nicolas Cage’s screen presence? Mercurial, perhaps? Volcanic? Volatile? How about mundane, schlubby, average? Not the page we’d think to turn to in our Roget’s Thesaurus.Yet here Cage is, channeling his inner drabness to chillingly comic effect in Kristoffer Borgli’s “Dream Scenario.” As Paul Matthews (heck, even the name is drab), a college professor at nowhere famous, he performs his job with perfect mediocrity, and seems a fairly mediocre husband and dad, too. With his graying beard, wire-rimmed specs and shiny bald spot, Cage’s Paul is the guy in the room you ignore.Until, suddenly, you can’t. Because something weird starts happening. Paul starts appearing in people’s dreams. Everyone’s dreams. The premise is delicious — and precarious. It recalled for me the setup in a very different movie, “Yesterday,” where only one guy on Earth remembers the Beatles. It makes for a fantastic beginning, but you immediately worry how they’ll manage to kee...

Ambitious seven-year housing plan overwhelmingly approved by Toronto City Council

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 19:52:36 GMT

Toronto City Council overwhelmingly approved an ambitious affordable housing plan Wednesday with a price tag it can’t currently afford.Mayor Olivia Chow said she wants to see 65,000 rental homes built over the next seven years at a cost of $36 billion – money that the city doesn’t have in its budget. That money, and how to get it, was a point of contention during the debate in council chambers.Funding has already been secured to deliver 4,455 homes with an estimated cost to deliver the remaining 60,545 homes pegged at between $28.6 billion and $31.5 billion over the next seven years. Currently, the estimated amount of funding needed from each order of government is between $500 million and $800 million per year, in addition to repayable financing.“The ball is in the federal government’s court and that ball has been there for a while,” said Chow. “We are hoping to see action. We are hoping to see the funds that are needed to build housing now...
